Today’s my mama’s birthday. So I’m working over a stove to make shrimp-n-grits with chicken andouille sausage, curried shrimp baked in puffed pastry, and green beans. It’s a tiny gathering that we’ve maintained for the last few years, consisting of my immediate siblings, my wife, my brother’s fiance, and the children we’re all responsible for. After dinner, we’ll eat peach cobbler and pecan pie topped with vanilla iced cream, neither of which I made. The cobbler and pie smelled so good in my car that I sat there sniffing until I nearly shed a tear. Of course, I’m subject to eating dessert first. We’ll have a good time and celebrate the life of my first example of faith, relationship, love, and service.
